Mind the Gaps- Narrative Research as Drawing...

This piece was created for my advisor Ruth Vinz's forthcoming book on Narrative Research, co-authored with Dave Schaafsma. Given that i just finished it and that it's going in a book, there may be some changes before the final, final version.

Essentially, it's a piece about approaching research using a metaphor of seeing, or drawing, or perhaps it's a piece on seeing through drawing, or a lesson drawing, or on art - or all of the above. I'm never too sure about these things. - Nick

I like how you start with a Rodin quote, and illustrate the truth of his quote with the Thinker and a poloroid, ending with the Thinker contemplating a photograph. Very clever, throughout!

Good drawing. It is amazing how much can be said with a few sentences, when they are illustrated by allusions to works of art.

Thanks Andrew. I'm hoping the work does just what you said - create a resonance between text and image so that the two together create far more than either of them on their own. (See my previous post, a visual essay on just that).

Btw, page four has been replaced again, hopefully for the last time! - Nick

I have read the book of Ruth on Narrative research. In this book, the authors describe--and tell illustrative stories about--the potential and limits of narrative for the purpose of inquiry in English education. They argue that narrative inquiry is uniquely suited to the questions educators are asking in the field today. The text includes guidance for theorizing, defining, conducting, and crafting narrative inquiry. The final chapter is a literary comic!
